Education and Training

Core Clinical Training Hospital

As a core clinical training hospital, we welcome numerous junior and senior residents each year. Our institution plays a pivotal role in medical education, and with the understanding and cooperation of our patients, we are dedicated to nurturing medical professionals who will contribute to future regional healthcare and provide compassionate care to patients.

Philosophy of Clinical Training

Guided by Tokushukai’s philosophy, our hospital systematically trains medical professionals to:

  • Address emergency medical needs within local communities
  • Handle highly advanced medical procedures with expertise
  • Excel on the global stage
  • Provide the highest quality of care with a sense of security and compassion
  • Recognize that medical professionals are human beings first and foremost

Training Policy

The training program at Shonan Kamakura General Hospital aims to develop not only skilled clinicians but also effective mentors who can nurture future generations. A good clinician is defined as a doctor who demonstrates “empathy” towards patients, provides holistic diagnoses, and delivers accurate treatments. To achieve this goal, the training system incorporates the following features:

  1. Focus on Medical Practice: Trainees can fully concentrate on medical practice.
  2. Team Medicine: Opportunities to train in a team-based medical environment.
  3. Comprehensive Training: Extensive training in primary care, emergency care, and various specialized fields.
  4. Elective Rotations: In addition to mandatory rotations, trainees can choose elective rotations.
  5. Remote and Island Medicine: Experience in remote and island medical practice.
  6. Near-peer Training: A unique approach to medical education.
  7. Academic Activities: Opportunities to engage in academic activities and conferences.

Shonan Kamakura University of Medical Science

Shonan Kamakura University

In April 2020, Shonan Kamakura University of Medical Science inaugurated its Faculty of Nursing at the former site of Shonan Kamakura General Hospital in Yamazaki, Kamakura City. This coeducational institution has an enrollment capacity of 100 students per year. The four-year program enables graduates to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and qualify for the national exams for nurses and public health nurses. Each year, approximately 100 dedicated students enroll and diligently pursue their studies.

The Kamakura area, rich in historical sites and traditional culture, combined with the Shonan area’s beaches and popularity for marine sports, offers an ideal environment for student life. Its proximity to Yokohama and Tokyo further enhances its appeal.

Our mission is to train nurses who are committed to patient care. Looking ahead, we plan to offer master’s and doctoral courses at the graduate level and expand to include other faculties.
